September PREVIEWS Pre-Order Picks: DC, Abstract, Black Mask, Dynamite

EDITOR’S NOTES:  This is the weekend that pre-orders for November books are due.  We’re hoping that you’re reviewing the September issue of Previews (with a copy from your local comics shop, or via the Previews website) and placing your pre-orders with your preferred comics source.  It’s the best way to make sure that you get a copy of the books you want to read.  It also helps your local comics shop determine what to order so they can manage that ever-growing inventory of books.  Not sure what you want to get?   In our usual helpful fashion, we concentrate on debut titles that we feel are worth checking out.  We continue our spotlight with these publishers of note . . . . .

DC COMICS

MOTHER PANIC #1:  Writer Jody Houser, Art by Tommy Lee Edwards.  The new Young Animal imprint at DC aims to be edgier and more far-out than their standard super-hero titles, striving for that middle ground between the Superman/Batman family of books and the
more adult Vertigo titles.  Based on the description, MOTHER PANIC looks to be the most normal of the Young Animal debuts, but we doubt that.    Violet Page is a celebrity with a nasty attitude.  Rather than be a bored rich girl, she’s a vigilante  in Gotham City.

ABSTRACT STUDIOS

MOTOR GIRL #1: Writer/Artist Terry Moore is an incredible creator.  To be able to see his vision at work from the ground floor with a brand new title is a rare opportunity.  Check it out and then seek out his other works.   Main character Samantha is a junkyard owner who helps out an alien in need of spare parts.  This draws the attention of government Area 51 investigators and trouble ensues.

BLACK MASK COMICS

NO ANGEL #1 (W) Eric Palicki, Adrianne Palicki (A) Ari Syahrazad (CA) Amancay Nahuelpan:  The promotional copy on this intriguing new title says it better than we could summarize it.

From the PREVIEWS catalog:  "Religious texts from The Bible to the Sumerian tablets speak of strange creatures descending from the heavens and mating with humans, their children the superhuman heroes of myth. None of this ever meant anything to Iraq War veteran Hannah Gregory, until she found herself in the crosshairs of a dangerous cult convinced that she's a descendant of these mysterious bloodlines... bloodlines they're determined to eradicate. No Angel is a cosmological and conspiratorial modern Western in the style of Preacher meets Justified by way of Jodorowsky."

GRAND PASSION #1  W) James Robinson (A) Tom Feister (CA) John Cassaday:
Writer James Robinson, one of the best scriptures of Justice Society of America, Squadron Supreme, Starman, and others, turns his hand to hard-boiled crime.  We can’t wait to see what he can do in this genre. This has been previewed as a “funny, violent, and sexy tale of romance that comics have been missing. Doc’s a cop. Mabel’s a crook. “

MYOPIA #1:  (W) Richard Dent (A) Patrick Berkenkotter (CA) Cezar Razek We love a well-written, imaginative science fiction tale. This looks like it may fit the bill.

From the PREVIEWS catalog:  "Based on an award-winning story by writer Rich Dent, "Myopia" merges speculative fiction and steampunk into a thrilling alternative reality.  Armed with a special set of lenses that make him almost invisible inside the Central Lens Network, James Chase sets out on a mission to stop the new world order's violation of the Magnetic Energy Agreement.  At first sold as a device to make life more convenient, the lens now works as a tool for the government to hide the devastation unleashed from excessive mining of the earth's core. Myopia migrated over from a successful Kickstarter supported by George R.R. Martin, Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood, Dean Koontz, and Jim Butcher.  Don't miss this debut issue!"
